Joana Breidenbach (1965) is an ethnologist who writes mainly on issues relating to transcultural identity.

Joana studied ethnology and art history in Munich, Berkeley, and London, earning her Ph.D. in 1994. Since 1992 she has worked as a writer and journalist in Berlin. She has penned numerous pieces on the cultural consequences of globalization, migration, and tourism, including Tanz der Kulturen (“Dance of the cultures”: Rowohlt, 2000, with Ina Zukrigl), a regular column in the magazine brand eins as well as articles in GEO and the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung. Along with Pal Nyiri, she was editor of China Inside Out: Contemporary Chinese Nationalism and Transnationalism (Central European University Press, 2005). Her next book Deutsch Südsee (“The German South Sea”), a book on beach culture, is currently in production with Marebuchverlag.
